Viking's Sekhmet Joins Nile Fleet as River Buildout Targets 114 Ships

Viking took delivery of the 82-guest Viking Sekhmet at Cairo's Massara shipyard, naming Cruise Planners' Michael Consoli as godfather and reinforcing an orderbook targeting 114 river ships by 2028.

Itinerary

  1. Viking took delivery of the 82-guest Viking Sekhmet at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, joining the Viking Ptah delivered in August.
  2. The Sekhmet carries 41 outside staterooms and will sail Viking's 12-day 'Pharaohs & Pyramids' itinerary plus a new 12-day 'Total Eclipse on the Nile' departure in 2027.
  3. Viking is committed to 19 additional river ships by 2028 (114-vessel river fleet), 11 additional ocean ships by 2032 and 2 additional expedition ships by 2031, for a combined ocean and expedition fleet of 28 ships by 2032.
  4. Cruise Planners owner Michael Consoli was named godfather of the Sekhmet, tying the launch to a major North American host agency inside the Expedia Group family of brands.
  5. Both Nile ships use a template itinerary: three nights in Cairo, a Luxor stay, an eight-day roundtrip Nile cruise, and a final night back in Cairo.

Viking took delivery of its newest Nile river ship, the Viking Sekhmet, at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, extending its Egypt capacity and reinforcing an orderbook that targets 114 river vessels by 2028.

The 82-guest ship carries 41 outside staterooms and joins the Viking Ptah, which Viking received in August. Both vessels were purpose-built for the Nile and will sail Viking's 12-day "Pharaohs & Pyramids" itinerary, with the Sekhmet also deployed on a new 12-day "Total Eclipse on the Nile" departure in 2027.

"The Nile has connected people with the history and culture of Egypt for thousands of years, and it continues to be a destination that inspires curious travelers," Viking president and chief executive officer Leah Talactac said in a statement. "With the arrival of the elegant Viking Sekhmet, we are pleased to offer even more opportunities for curious travelers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort."

What does the delivery mean for travel sellers?

For the U.S. and European travel-advisor community, the Sekhmet's commercial significance sits less in the ship itself than in Viking's signaling. The line continues to add long-haul river capacity at a moment when most competitors have trimmed newbuild pipelines. Viking's agents and trade partners gain a second Nile hull to package within Egypt itineraries just as tour operators chase differentiated product on the river.

Viking tapped Michael Consoli, owner of Cruise Planners, as godfather of the Sekhmet — a ceremonial role, but one that links the launch to one of the largest host-agency networks in North America. Cruise Planners sits inside the Expedia Group family of brands, giving the launch an implicit distribution thread to thousands of U.S. home-based advisors.

How does Viking's Nile product actually run?

Both the Sekhmet and Ptah feed the same template itinerary. Guests start with a three-night Cairo stay at a first-class hotel, with optional visits to the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Travelers then fly to Luxor, touring the Temples of Luxor and Karnak, before boarding for an eight-day roundtrip Nile cruise. Sailings include:

  • Valley of the Kings and the tomb of Tutankhamen
  • The Temple of Khnum in Esna
  • The Dendera Temple complex in Qena
  • The High Dam in Aswan
  • A visit to a colorful Nubian village

The trip closes with a flight back to Cairo and a final night in the city.

What's in Viking's broader orderbook?

The Sekhmet is the latest move on a sizeable pipeline. Based on Viking's committed orderbook, the company expects to take delivery of 19 additional river ships by 2028, 11 additional ocean ships by 2032 and two additional expedition ships by 2031. With these orders, the cruise line will operate 114 river ships in 2028 and 28 ocean and expedition ships by 2032.

For travel sellers, the math is the trade story. Viking is committing to roughly one new river ship every six months for the next three years, alongside a near-steady cadence of ocean deliveries through 2032. That pace keeps Viking inventory in front of agents as a default long-haul recommendation in river and ocean categories where competitor pipelines have shrunk. It also strengthens the operator's negotiating position on group allocations, consortia overrides and onboard credit terms at a moment when advisors are pushing suppliers for higher commission structures.

What comes next for Viking's Nile buildout?

Viking's next delivery dates and the 2027 eclipse sailing will test whether Sekhmet cabin revenue tracks the Ptah's first-season load factor; travel sellers should expect Viking to use the Nile pair to anchor Egypt land-and-cruise packages through at least the 2027-2028 shoulder seasons.
