Viking Bets Big on Egypt With 19-Day Nile Sailing From 2028
Viking opens bookings for a 19-day Grand Nile Journey from 2028, its longest Egypt itinerary yet, backed by a 10-ship fleet growing to 12 and a $25-deposit Fall Sale.

Itinerary
- Viking's 19-day Grand Nile Journey opens for booking, with departures beginning in 2028.
- The itinerary pairs four Cairo hotel nights with a 14-night Cairo-to-Aswan sailing on the 52-guest Viking Ra.
- Viking operates 10 vessels in Egypt, with two additional ships expected in 2028.
- The 12-day Total Eclipse Nile voyage for 2027 is already sold out.
- A Fall Sale offers U.S. residents reduced airfare, special fares and a $25 deposit through October 31, 2026.
Viking has opened bookings for a 19-day "Grand Nile Journey" in Egypt, its longest itinerary in the country to date, with departures beginning in 2028. The product stretches a standard Nile cruise into a nearly three-week trip — four hotel nights in Cairo followed by a 14-night sailing from Cairo to Aswan aboard the Viking Ra, a purpose-built river vessel carrying 52 guests in 26 suites.
For sellers of travel, the significance is the positioning. Long, high-priced itineraries tend to lift average booking value per guest, and Viking is pairing the new route with an aggressive Fall Sale: U.S. residents get reduced airfare, special fares and a $25 deposit through October 31, 2026. That low deposit threshold is designed to lock in early commitment on a 2028 departure.
What does the itinerary include?
Viking bills the voyage as its most in-depth exploration of Egypt yet, combining headline landmarks with lesser-visited archaeological sites in Middle Egypt (the stretch of the Nile between Cairo and Luxor) across 17 guided tours. In Cairo, guests visit the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum before boarding.
The sailing itself calls at sites most Nile itineraries skip:
- The Meidum Pyramid, a key stage in the evolution of pyramid construction
- The cliffside Noblemen's Tombs of Beni Hasan
- Tell el-Amarna, the remains of the royal capital founded by Pharaoh Akhenaten
- Deir el-Muharraq monastery, reflecting Egypt's Coptic Christian heritage
- The temples of Luxor and Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Seti I at Abydos
- In Aswan: the island temple complex of Philae, the temples at Abu Simbel, and a felucca (traditional Nile sailboat) ride
"Egypt has captivated travelers for generations, and we believe there is always more to discover," said Leah Talactac, president and chief executive officer of Viking. "Our new Grand Nile Journey reflects that approach, giving guests more time to explore Egypt and experience the many layers of its history and culture."
How does this fit Viking's Egypt build-out?
The itinerary sits on top of an expanding fleet. Viking now operates 10 vessels in Egypt, with two more expected in 2028 — the same year the Grand Nile Journey debuts. Earlier this month the company named its two newest regional ships, the Viking Ptah and the Viking Sekhmet. The new product complements the 12-day "Pharaohs & Pyramids" itinerary and the 12-day "Total Eclipse" Nile voyage, which has already sold out for 2027.
A sold-out 2027 charter-class sailing plus fleet growth to 12 vessels signals that demand on the Nile is outrunning supply, and Viking is converting that scarcity into longer, higher-yield products.
What extensions are available?
Agents can build longer trips with pre- and post-cruise land packages: Cairo (two nights, with a Viking Host), Morocco (five nights, fully guided) and a Jordan routing covering the Dead Sea, Petra and Amman (four nights, fully guided). Each extension adds commissionable land inventory to a river booking.
With bookings already live, a $25-deposit window running to October 31, 2026, and two more ships arriving by launch year, Viking has given the Egypt program enough capacity and shelf space to make the Nile a core river category rather than a seasonal add-on.
