Lindblad Nears Fleet Expansion Deal, but CEO Won't Give Details
Lindblad is 'very close' to a fleet expansion deal, CEO Natalya Leahy said, while charters drive mid-single-digit capacity growth and Alaska consolidates for 2027.

Itinerary
- Lindblad CEO Natalya Leahy said the company is 'very close to finalizing' fleet expansion plans on the Q3 earnings call Tuesday.
- Capacity grew mid-single digits this year, mainly from deployment optimization and charter expansion.
- The Greg Mortimer will replace two smaller ships in Alaska for summer 2027.
- Expedition capacity has more than doubled in a decade but remains under 1% of total cruise capacity.
- Lindblad hosts roughly 60,000 annual guests across eight brands.
Lindblad Expeditions is "very close to finalizing" plans to add ships to its fleet, CEO Natalya Leahy told investors on the company's third quarter earnings call Tuesday — without saying whether the capacity will come from new builds, acquisitions or charters.
The comment came in response to an analyst who asked directly which route new capacity would take. Leahy declined to pick one. "We're not ready to share yet, but we're very close to finalizing our plans in that regard," she said. "And I just ask us all to be a little patient with that."
That's a promise of capacity, not a signed order — and investors have heard the tease before. Leahy herself noted this is a conversation the company has repeated "on the last couple of calls."
What's driving growth until then?
Charters are carrying the business. Lindblad has seen mid-single-digit capacity growth this year, and Leahy said that pace will hold.
"We have seen mid-single-digit capacity growth this year, mainly from our optimization of deployment, but also from significant expansion of our charters," she said. "And we will continue to see mid-single-digit capacity growth on our charter-expanded business going forward."
She pointed to two deployments behind the numbers:
- A larger Amazon program
- Growing Alaska business, where the Greg Mortimer will replace two smaller ships for summer 2027
Swapping two vessels for one is consolidation, not pure growth — worth watching when Alaska 2027 bookings materialize.
Can Lindblad pay for expansion?
CFO Rick Goldberg said the balance sheet leaves the company positioned to pursue "fleet expansion through new builds, acquisitions and charters" — notably keeping all three options on the table — as well as further land acquisitions.
No dollar figures, leverage levels or timelines came with the statement, so the funding claim rests on management's characterization of the balance sheet.
How big is the runway, really?
Leahy framed the expedition segment as under-penetrated. Expedition capacity has more than doubled over the past decade, yet it still represents less than 1% of total cruise capacity, she said.
Lindblad's roughly 60,000 annual guests across eight brands account for less than 0.1% of global travelers with the financial means to take its trips, she added: "This gives us an enormous runway for growth."
The denominator there — affluent travelers worldwide — is a market-sizing estimate, not a measured booking pool, and "travelers with financial means" is doing considerable work in that math.
Still, doubling segment capacity in ten years while staying under 1% of cruising does suggest demand has absorbed supply so far.
For sellers of expedition product, the practical takeaway is near-term: more charter capacity landing at a mid-single-digit annual clip, with a bigger fleet announcement — the kind that shifts inventory for years — still pending.
