River Expeditions will enter Europe's river cruise market in the first quarter of 2028 with a 160-guest vessel under a long-term charter with Crucemundo Shipping AG, a deal that adds an expedition-style competitor to the Rhine, Main and Danube corridors dominated by established operators.

The company, founded by expedition leader Jan Bryde, has chartered the River Silence, a renovated ship to be renamed the River Expedition and reconfigured for 160 guests. First departures are planned along the Rhine, Main and Danube, with operations expected to begin in Q1 2028 — roughly two years of lead time before the brand generates its first revenue in a segment already carrying heavy capacity on those rivers.

The vessel's twin-cruiser design separates the propulsion system from passenger accommodation, reducing noise and vibration. That engineering claim positions the ship against older tonnage on the same waterways, where onboard comfort is a competitive differentiator for sellers marketing premium river products.

The new brand frames its offer as "bringing the philosophy and expertise of expedition travel to Europe's waterways, creating journeys shaped by curiosity, cultural understanding and a closer connection with the places visited," according to its launch announcement. Translated for distribution, that means a program built on guided activity and interpretation rather than conventional port calls.

Bryde, whose background spans more than three decades in remote-destination expedition travel, said: "After more than 30 years exploring some of the world's most remote places, I've come to believe that exploration is a mindset, not a destination." He added: "Europe's rivers offer remarkable opportunities to look beyond the familiar. With the team we've brought together, we're creating journeys that invite travelers to explore more and connect deeper."

What does the product look like?

The company lists five pillars of its onboard and ashore program:

  • An integrated expedition experience combining specialist knowledge, cultural immersion, nature and active exploration
  • Ten expedition professionals on every journey providing interpretation and firsthand insight
  • Curated encounters with local communities and access to selected locations
  • Wildlife observation, birdwatching, guided hikes, kayaking and e-bike adventures, plus seasonal activities where conditions allow
  • Purpose-adapted facilities and expedition equipment geared to the guest experience

The staffing ratio is the number agents should note: ten expedition staff per 160 guests, a one-to-sixteen ratio that implies a cost structure closer to ocean expedition cruising than to mainstream river cruising. Onboard hardware includes 10 double kayaks, e-bikes and specialist seasonal gear.

Who is building the program?

Experienced expedition leaders Ida Olsson and Ryan Hope-Inglis will play key roles in developing and delivering the program, the company said. No pricing, itinerary lengths, sales channels or commission structure have been disclosed at this stage.

The company has released no bookings figures, no projected capacity beyond the single vessel and no financial terms for the Crucemundo charter. Everything announced so far is plan and positioning, not measured demand.

First revenue sailings are scheduled for Q1 2028, giving trade partners roughly two years to assess whether an expedition format can take share on Europe's most saturated river routes.
