Carnival Reshuffles Fleets as Queen Anne Heads to P&O in 2029
Queen Anne joins P&O Cruises in 2029 as Arcadia moves to Holland America, while Ambassador buys Oceana's Sirena and a Greek auction prices the Gemini at 3.8 million euros.
Itinerary
- Queen Anne (3,000 guests, built 2024) transfers from Cunard to P&O Cruises in 2029.
- P&O's Arcadia (1,968 guests) moves to Holland America Line in 2029 with a major refurbishment.
- Ambassador Cruise Line bought Oceania's Sirena; it becomes Ambella after leaseback through Spring 2028.
- The 960-guest Gemini will be auctioned in Greece with a minimum bid of 3,805,462 euros.
- The 2021-built tall ship Golden Horizon was reportedly sold for 110 million euros.
Cunard will lose its newest ship in 2029, when the 113,000-ton, 3,000-passenger Queen Anne transfers to sister brand P&O Cruises in a fleet reshuffle announced in October.
The move is one half of a broader Carnival Corporation initiative. In parallel, P&O Cruises will hand its 2005-built Arcadia to Holland America Line, also in 2029. According to the company, the 1,968-passenger vessel will join the Holland America Evolution program, undergoing a major refurbishment before debuting in the U.S. market.
For sellers of premium British cruising, the swap shifts product positioning on both sides: Cunard consolidates around its remaining tonnage while P&O gains a ship barely five years old, and Holland America adds capacity with an established brand-fit vessel rather than newbuild expenditure.
What happens to the ships changing hands?
Ambassador Cruise Line made the month's clearest commercial statement. In late September it purchased the Sirena from Oceania Cruises for a new operation in Germany. The 684-passenger, 30,200-ton ship, built in 2000, will be leased back to Oceania through Spring 2028 before joining Ambassador as the Ambella, sailing summer seasons in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
The deal already has a counterparty: Semester at Sea will charter the Ambella for winter seasons starting in late 2028. The Institute for Shipboard Education, which runs the brand, said the ship will spend eight months per year delivering its academic cruising product. Ambassador has effectively matched year-round utilization for the vessel before delivery — a structure that de-risks the acquisition.
Which ships are going to auction?
The 1992-built Gemini, laid up near Athens, will be auctioned by Greek authorities in October after Miray Cruises failed to pay its debts. Auctioneers set the minimum bid at 3,805,462 euros for the 960-guest, 19,093-ton vessel. The sale closes a chapter for the Turkish operator whose mid-market ambitions had already attracted scrutiny across the trade.
What other transactions closed in September?
Two further sales surfaced, though details remain thin:
- Blue Dream Star — the 836-passenger, 2001-built ship was reportedly sold to a Turkish shipowner after roughly two years laid up in China. Cruise Industry News understands it will operate short Mediterranean cruises starting in 2027; the transaction is not confirmed at press time.
- Golden Horizon — the 300-passenger tall ship built in 2021 was reportedly sold for 110 million euros, according to Croatian news sources, with buyers undisclosed. Originally ordered for Star Clippers, the 8,770-ton vessel spent most of the past five years laid up at Brodosplit shipyard in Split.
The Golden Horizon figure, if accurate, values a near-new sailing vessel at a premium to comparably sized conventional tonnage — a data point worth testing against the secondhand market once the buyer and deployment surface.
Taken together, the October moves show brands trading tonnage inside corporate families to rebalance capacity while independents like Ambassador buy secondhand ships and lock in charter income to underwrite the purchase. Expect further detail on the Blue Dream Star and Golden Horizon transactions, and the Queen Anne handover timeline, as the 2029 transfers approach.
