Itinerary

  1. Queen Anne transfers to P&O Cruises in May 2029 after a refit and renaming
  2. Arcadia leaves P&O Cruises on August 21, 2029, transferring to Holland America Line
  3. Cunard consolidates to three ships: Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth
  4. Queen Anne joins the Four Queens celebration in Liverpool in May 2028
  5. A major Queen Mary 2 upgrade completes next year

Cunard’s Queen Anne will transfer to P&O Cruises in May 2029, Carnival Corporation has announced, in a two-ship fleet reshuffle that also sends P&O’s Arcadia to Holland America Line after a farewell season ending August 21, 2029.

The moves tighten Carnival’s portfolio logic: the 2024-built Queen Anne, designed as a contemporary ship with flexible public spaces, lands at the more mass-market British brand, while Cunard consolidates around three vessels with established heritage identities. For sellers of UK cruise, the changes will eventually shift which inventory sits under which brand — and how it is packaged and priced.

What changes and when?

  • Queen Anne sails for Cunard through her 2028-29 world cruise, then undergoes an extensive refit and renaming before entering P&O service in May 2029.
  • Arcadia completes a special farewell season with P&O ending August 21, 2029, then transfers to Holland America Line, staying within the Carnival Corporation family.
  • Cunard emerges with a three-ship fleet centered on Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

The company did not disclose the cost of the reimagining, the new name for Queen Anne, or Arcadia’s intended deployment under Holland America — details that will determine the commercial weight of the move for trade partners.

Why the swap?

Carnival UK, P&O Cruises and Cunard president Paul Ludlow framed the transfers as long-term portfolio management rather than a retreat from either brand.

“These decisions reflect a careful, long-term view of our portfolio and where the individual strengths of each ship can best support guest demand and the future direction of our two cruise lines,” Ludlow said.

He argued Queen Anne’s modern design and dining and entertainment mix give her “a natural affinity with the modern P&O Cruises holiday experience,” and that after refit she will “introduce a new class of ship to the P&O Cruises fleet” with a different scale and itinerary range.

What does it mean for Cunard?

Cunard keeps a smaller but, in Ludlow’s telling, more coherent fleet. “The change will give Cunard a more closely unified fleet centered on Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth,” he said, adding that the decision “does not change our commitment to Cunard or its future.”

Investment continues: Carnival will complete a major upgrade of flagship Queen Mary 2 next year. Ludlow called the ocean liner, the world’s only ship providing regular transatlantic service, “a one-of-a-kind asset” and said the investment is designed to sustain it “for decades to come.”

Selling the transition

The schedule gives the trade a long runway of bookable milestones. Queen Anne plays a central role in the Four Queens celebration in Liverpool in May 2028 — a Cunard gathering likely to command premium pricing — and sails her final world voyage as a Cunard ship in January 2029. Arcadia’s farewell season with P&O runs through August 21, 2029, creating commemorative-sailage demand from a ship that has served the line for more than two decades.

Ludlow said P&O will ensure the seasons ahead are “a fitting celebration of her time as a Cunard Queen,” signaling farewell-voyage marketing rather than a wind-down.

With Queen Anne’s renaming, refit scope and Arcadia’s Holland America deployment still unannounced, the trade will be watching Carnival’s next capacity announcements — starting with how P&O positions a fourth ship class for the 2029 season.
