VIVA Cruises has put 325 sailings across seven ships on the books for its 2028 river season, a 10th-anniversary program built on more departures, more turnaround ports and a heavier bet on themed cruising. The Düsseldorf-based operator is following up its 2028 VIVA Boutique rollout in France and Italy with capacity spread across the Rhine, Main, Moselle, Danube and Douro, plus German canal and Baltic coast itineraries.

The commercial hook for agents is simple enough: cruises booked between October 15 and November 15, 2026 come with a complimentary upgrade to the next higher cabin category. That's a four-week window sellers can build early-2028 business around, and it applies fleetwide.

"As we celebrate 10 years of VIVA Cruises, we're proud of how far we've come and excited for what lies ahead," said Nasim Ghannadian, vice president sales & marketing North America. "Our 2028 season reflects that momentum, with more itineraries, expanded departures and unique onboard experiences that give travelers even more ways to discover Europe."

Where is the capacity going?

Vienna takes the biggest role in the program, paired with expanded roundtrip cruising on the Rhine, Moselle and Danube. The ship-by-ship breakdown:

  • Viva Enjoy: 22 seven-night roundtrip departures from Vienna, with Regensburg added as a turnaround port (the port where passengers embark and disembark).
  • Viva Moments: joins the Danube fleet after a 2027 renovation, running new seven-night itineraries between Passau, Vienna and Budapest.
  • Viva Two: new five-night Danube cruises linking Passau, Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava — a shorter product aimed at time-pressed buyers.
  • Viva One: Moselle roundtrips from Düsseldorf jump from 10 to 15 departures, a 50% increase. New four-night Rhine cruises in November and December call at Bonn, Mainz and Koblenz. The ship also sails an Ambassador Cruise for repeat guests.
  • Viva Ruby: a new 10-night routing through three countries — Basel in Switzerland, Nancy in France, Düsseldorf in Germany.

The shorter four- and five-night formats matter for distribution. They open river cruising to buyers who balk at week-long commitments, which widens the addressable market for agents without adding ships.

What's the themed-cruise play?

Themed departures multiply in 2028, covering music, food, wine and crime — presumably the fictional kind. The lineup:

  • Seven-night Jazz Cruises with pianist Frank Muschalle aboard the Viva One.
  • Seven Crime Cruises aboard the Viva Ruby.
  • Culinary sailings on the Viva Enjoy (Danube) and the Porto Mirante (Douro).
  • Wine cruises on the Viva Moments and Viva Ruby, featuring Masters of Wine (holders of the industry's wine-education qualification).

Theming is a yield tool as much as a marketing one. It gives the operator repeat-bookable, niche-demand products that discount less aggressively than generic sailings — a pattern river lines across Europe have leaned into as post-pandemic demand normalized.

How deep is the shore program?

The season carries 320 shore excursions across 13 river regions, ranging from cultural visits and regional tastings to small-group exclusive experiences. Excursion depth is increasingly a differentiator in river cruising, where the fare and the hardware are broadly similar across competitors and the land program does the selling.

The verdict

VIVA is marking a decade with more of everything — departures, ports, themes, excursions. The 50% lift in Moselle roundtrips and the Vienna-heavy deployment show where the operator expects demand to concentrate. Ghannadian's framing is momentum; the numbers back her up on supply, at least. Whether 325 sailings fill at target fares will be the question for 2027 booking cycles, and the cabin-upgrade window in late 2026 is where sellers should watch early load factors form.
