Itinerary

  1. Swan Hellenic will host six SETI Institute scientists on six expedition cruises in 2027, the partnership's fifth year.
  2. Sailings run March 21 to November 18, 2027, across the fleet's three ships: Minerva, Vega and Diana.
  3. SETI Institute CEO Bill Diamond will personally accompany the Halifax–Reykjavík Viking Routes voyage, May 20-31, 2027.
  4. Itineraries span the Pacific Islands, Falklands, West Africa, Iceland-Canada, Svalbard and South Africa to Antarctica.

Swan Hellenic will place six SETI Institute scientists on six cultural expedition cruises in 2027, extending a partnership now entering its fifth year into a product line the operator can price as specialist enrichment rather than standard cruising.

The 2027 Explore Space at Sea series covers astronomy, astrophysics, astrobiology and planetary science, with each scientist sailing as an accompanying expert on a single voyage. Swan Hellenic announced the roster in a press release.

Mario Bounas, chief commercial officer of Swan Hellenic, said: "We are delighted to celebrate the fifth year of our successful partnership with the SETI Institute and to continue it with six new Explore Space at Sea voyages in 2027."

The SETI Institute, a research organization searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, supplies credibility that few expedition operators can replicate at scale. For sellers of travel, the format gives agents a concrete differentiator on long, high-ticket itineraries in off-peak shoulder months.

Which scientists sail where?

The 2027 assignments, as listed by the company:

  • Ross Beyer, planetary scientist at the Carl Sagan Center, joins "Cruising the Pacific Islands: New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands," Auckland to Honiara, March 21 to April 3, 2027, aboard the Minerva.
  • Uma Gorti, chair of astronomy and astrophysics at the Carl Sagan Center, joins "Patagonia and the Wild Atlantic: Cruise to the Falkland Islands," Ushuaia to Montevideo, March 25 to April 8, aboard the Vega.
  • Derek Kozel, principal investigator of the GNU Radio Project, joins "West Africa Coast and Atlantic Islands," Dakar to Lisbon, May 5-14, 2027, aboard the Diana.
  • Bill Diamond, president and CEO of the SETI Institute, joins "From Canada to Iceland Along the Viking Routes," Halifax to Reykjavík, May 20-31, 2027, aboard the Vega.
  • Megan Seritan, deputy manager of the Ring-Moon Systems Node at NASA's Planetary Data System, joins "From Iceland to Svalbard," Reykjavík to Longyearbyen, May 31 to June 10, 2027, aboard the Vega.
  • Janice Bishop, chair of planetary exploration at the Carl Sagan Center, joins "South Atlantic Cruise: from South Africa to Antarctica," Cape Town round trip to Ushuaia, October 29 to November 18, 2027, aboard the Diana.

Why does this matter for distribution?

The series spreads across all three ships in the fleet — Minerva, Vega and Diana — and across four revenue regions: the South Pacific, South America, the Atlantic corridor and the Arctic.

That spread matters. Themed departures anchored to a named expert typically command occupancy premiums and give trade partners hookable inventory in months when polar and expedition demand softens. The West Africa sailing in May and the March Falklands itinerary both fall outside peak expedition windows.

Swan Hellenic has not published pricing or commission terms for the six sailings in the release. Agents will need to check live inventory as cabins with expert access tend to book earliest.

The five-year-old SETI tie-up has become a recurring, datable franchise for the operator, and the 2027 slate signals it will keep running as a core pillar of Swan Hellenic's cultural expedition positioning.
