Carnival Spirit Returns to Seattle a Day Late, Forcing Compensation Package
Carnival Spirit returns to Seattle 24 hours late on October 9, 2026, cutting one cruise short, cancelling Cabo San Lucas and triggering refunds plus $250 stateroom credits.
Itinerary
- Carnival Spirit returns to Seattle on October 9, 2026, nearly 24 hours late after repairs on October 3.
- The following 16-night Seattle-to-Mobile repositioning cruise is shortened by one day.
- Carnival cancelled the Cabo San Lucas call to keep the ship's Panama Canal transit slot.
- Guests receive pro-rated refunds, a $250 onboard credit per stateroom, and up to $200 per person for independent air change fees.
- Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, calls proceed as scheduled.
Carnival Spirit will arrive in Seattle nearly 24 hours behind schedule on October 9, 2026, forcing Carnival Cruise Line to shorten the next cruise by one day and cancel a port call in Cabo San Lucas to protect its Panama Canal transit slot.
The delay stems from a technical issue that required additional repair time on October 3, 2026, while the 2,124-passenger ship was finishing a 15-night Hawaii and Canada sailing that departed Seattle on September 23, 2026. Carnival disclosed the change in a letter to guests booked on the vessel's next departure.
"As a result, the ship's return to Seattle will be delayed until Friday, October 9, resulting in a shortening of your cruise by one day," the company said.
What does the delay change for the next sailing?
The affected voyage is a 16-night repositioning cruise from Seattle to Mobile, Alabama, featuring a full Panama Canal transit plus calls on the West Coast of Central America and the Caribbean. Because of the later departure, Carnival cancelled the scheduled visit to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to keep the ship's reserved Panama Canal crossing window.
Calls at Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, remain on the itinerary as planned.
How is Carnival compensating guests?
The compensation package includes:
- A pro-rated refund of the cruise fare for the lost day
- Pro-rated refunds on pre-purchased service packages, including Wi-Fi and beverage packages
- Automatic cancellation and refund of Carnival-booked Cabo San Lucas shore excursions
- A $250 onboard credit per stateroom
- Reimbursement of up to $200 per person for non-refundable air change fees and other travel-related costs for guests with independent flight arrangements
"We know this is disappointing news and we apologize for these unexpected adjustments," Carnival said in the letter.
Guests who booked flights through Carnival's FLY2FUN air program will have their itineraries adjusted automatically to match the revised schedule.
What happens next?
Carnival said it will release updated embarkation details for the October 9 departure closer to the sailing date. The current Hawaii voyage, part of the line's Carnival Journeys long-cruise program, originally included calls in Honolulu, Nawiliwili, Kahului, Hilo and Victoria.
For travel sellers, the compensation structure signals how Carnival handles schedule disruptions at scale: automatic refunds and flight rebooking reduce rework for agents, but the $200 per-person cap on independent air reimbursement is a concrete figure to flag when advising clients who book their own flights.
