Carnival Bets Queen Mary 2 Refit Delivers Returns for Decades
Carnival will add 31 staterooms to Queen Mary 2 in a 2027 refit CEO Josh Weinstein says will keep the transatlantic liner generating returns for decades. Drydock runs March 31 to May 9.

Itinerary
- Queen Mary 2 enters drydock at Damen Shiprepair Brest on March 31, 2027, returning to service May 9, 2027.
- The refit adds 16 Princess Grill Suites and 15 Britannia staterooms — 31 new rooms in total.
- CEO Josh Weinstein called the ship "a one-of-a-kind asset" and said the investment is designed to generate attractive returns for decades.
Carnival Corporation will add 31 new staterooms to the Queen Mary 2 and refresh every Grill Suite onboard, an investment CEO Josh Weinstein said is designed to keep the Cunard flagship generating attractive returns well into the future.
Speaking on the company's third quarter earnings call, Weinstein framed the refurbishment as part of Carnival's selective fleet investment strategy. He positioned the ship as a unique asset in the company's portfolio: the world's only ocean liner providing regular transatlantic service.
"It is a one-of-a-kind asset, and our investment is designed to ensure it continues to generate attractive returns for decades to come," Weinstein said.
The timeline is fixed. The ship enters drydock at Damen Shiprepair Brest on March 31, 2027, and returns to service on May 9, 2027 — ahead of the peak summer season, limiting the revenue days lost to the yard.
What Sellers Get: More Premium Inventory
The capacity change matters for anyone selling Cunard. The refit adds 16 Princess Grill Suites and 15 Britannia-category staterooms, bringing the total of new accommodations to 31. That expands the highest-yield inventory on a ship where premium suites are typically the first to sell out on transatlantic crossings.
Every existing Grill Suite will be refreshed with new interiors, furnishings and finishes, along with newly designed bathrooms. The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants — the dining venues tied to those top-tier cabin categories — will also be refreshed, and the ship gains additional outdoor deck space.
For agents and tour operators, the pitch is straightforward: refreshed suites plus more of them gives Cunard new premium product to merchandise for the 2027 summer season and beyond.
Beyond the Suites
The rest of the work spreads across revenue-generating and experience areas. Upgrades include expanded and redesigned kennels — a signature feature for transatlantic passengers traveling with pets — a transformed Mareel Wellness & Beauty, new luxury retail and a major digital upgrade to the Illuminations planetarium.
The retail and spa components point to higher onboard spend per passenger, a metric Carnival tracks closely across its brands. The wellness and retail refreshes follow the pattern of recent Carnival Corporation refits, which prioritize driving higher-ticket purchases over purely cosmetic work.
Strategy, Not Sentiment
Weinstein's comments make clear Carnival views the 2004-built liner through a returns lens, not nostalgia. The roughly five-week drydock in early 2027 represents a deliberate trade-off: lost sailing days in the shoulder season against a modernized product intended to command premium pricing for years.
Carnival has not disclosed the cost of the refit. Weinstein's "decades to come" framing signals the company expects the investment to pay back across many booking cycles, not a single season.
The first test comes with the May 9, 2027 return to service, when the refreshed Queen Mary 2 enters the summer transatlantic season with more premium inventory than at any point in its history.
