Virgin Voyages Swaps Cabo Call for Ensenada as Hurricane Rachel Disrupts Itinerary

Virgin Voyays swapped Brilliant Lady's Cabo San Lucas call for Ensenada after Hurricane Rachel, auto-cancelling shore excursions with full refunds and shifting Mazatlán port times by two hours.

Itinerary

  1. Brilliant Lady's Cabo San Lucas call was replaced with Ensenada on October 4, 2026, due to residual swell from Hurricane Rachel.
  2. The 2,770-passenger ship departed Los Angeles on a Mexican Riviera cruise on October 3, 2026.
  3. Shore excursions for Cabo booked through Virgin will be automatically cancelled with full refunds to the original payment method.
  4. Mazatlán arrival and departure were delayed by about two hours, to 11 AM and 8 PM.
  5. The ship sails the West Coast through late October before repositioning to the Caribbean.

Virgin Voyages replaced Brilliant Lady's scheduled Cabo San Lucas call with a stop in Ensenada after Hurricane Rachel left residual swell that made tendering unsafe, forcing a compensation workflow the line says requires no guest action.

The 2,770-passenger ship, sailing a Mexican Riviera cruise that departed Los Angeles on October 3, 2026, called at Ensenada on Sunday, October 4, before continuing to Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Virgin had warned booked guests last week that changes were possible and confirmed the revised schedule in an online update.

"Rachel has safely moved away from Brilliant Lady's route and is no longer a risk to the voyage," the company said. "It's left behind residual swell strong enough that tendering into Cabo San Lucas wouldn't be safe or comfortable, so we've made the call to swap that stop for Ensenada."

What happens to shore excursions?

Any Cabo San Lucas shore excursions booked through Virgin Voyages will be automatically cancelled, with full refunds issued to guests' original form of payment. Sellers of travel should expect client questions on refund timing rather than rebooking mechanics, since the cancellation requires no action from passengers.

The storm also disrupted port timing beyond the port swap. Virgin delayed Brilliant Lady's arrival and departure in Mazatlán by approximately two hours; the ship is now scheduled to arrive at 11 AM and depart for Puerto Vallarta at 8 PM. That shift affects independent shore excursion planning, which falls outside the line's automatic refund process.

"We know Cabo was part of the plan, but we're confident that we can deliver a safe and incredible Mexican Riviera getaway you've been looking forward to," Virgin said.

Where does Brilliant Lady go next?

The ship began its West Coast deployment in September after completing a summer season in Alaska. It will continue sailing the region through late October, when it is scheduled to operate a repositioning voyage to the Caribbean.

For agents, the change illustrates the operational churn of fall hurricane-season itineraries on both coasts: Virgin moved quickly from a pre-emptive guest advisory to a confirmed port substitution within days, with automatic refunds and revised port times communicated through its own channels. Clients booked on remaining West Coast sailings this month should expect itinerary decisions to continue tracking storm activity in the region.
