Virgin Voyages has released a four-part short film series, "Mermaid Origins", built with the creative AI suite Magnific — a campaign the brand says would once have required a feature-film budget to produce.

The films explore the mythology behind the four mermaids that front Virgin Voyages' ships: Scarlet, Valiant, Resilient and Brilliant. Creative studio Magnific produced the work in collaboration with production company Native Foreign, which developed distinct personas and folklore for each mermaid through narrative storytelling.

What does the campaign involve?

The package has three components:

  • A four-part cinematic short film series, one origin story per mermaid
  • A behind-the-scenes documentary on how each artist used emerging technology
  • Origin stories built by artists from different countries, one per mermaid

The documentary debuted at Native Foreign's inaugural "L.A. Made" event in Culver City on October 14.

"Every brand says it has iconic characters, but we actually built ours a mythology," said Billy Bohan Chinique, VP of marketing and innovation at Virgin Voyages.

"'Mermaid Origins' is Virgin Voyages doing what we do best: taking something playful and pushing it further than anyone expects, with artists from around the world who brought their own vision to Scarlet, Valiant, Resilient and Brilliant," Chinique added.

Why the cost argument matters

The most commercially relevant claim comes from Magnific's CEO. Joaquín Cuenca Abela framed the campaign as a budget story: the mermaids have been part of the brand since launch, but "giving each of them a world of her own would once have needed a feature-film budget, so the mermaids stayed still."

That is the pitch travel sellers should scrutinize: AI-assisted production lowers the cost of cinematic brand content enough for a cruise line to justify it as marketing spend rather than entertainment investment. Virgin Voyages has not disclosed production costs, campaign spend, or booking targets tied to the films — the results so far are creative output, not measured bookings.

AI as medium, not replacement

Native Foreign's co-founder and chief creative officer, Nik Kleverov, positioned the technology as subordinate to human direction.

"AI can amplify an idea, but it can't replace the person behind it," Kleverov said. "Storytelling will always need creatives and artists to lead the narrative."

He said the campaign used "AI as another medium in our creative toolkit to explore new possibilities" to expand the characters and build interconnected worlds guided by each artist's vision.

The distinction matters for trade observers: Virgin Voyages is presenting AI as a production accelerator for artist-led work, not an automated content pipeline — a framing that aligns with how hotel groups and airlines are beginning to test generative tools in brand campaigns.

What comes next

The campaign is live now, with the film series and documentary forming the core of the push. Whether the mythology translates into bookings is the open question, and one Virgin Voyages has yet to answer with data.
