R Yacht's Sefu Debut Pushed From 2027 to Spring 2028
R Yacht's first vessel, the 120-passenger Sefu, will now enter service in spring 2028 instead of ahead of summer 2027, per the Japanese luxury brand's September 2026 newsletter. Deployment details remain unannounced.
Itinerary

- The vessel will fly the Japanese flag and be registered at the Port of Uno, with Far East itineraries including Japan

- Full deployment routes and a booking opening date have not been announced
R Yacht has pushed the debut of its first vessel, the 120-passenger Sefu, from the summer 2027 season to spring 2028 — a roughly 12-month delay disclosed in the Japanese luxury brand's September 2026 newsletter.
The company did not provide a revised construction schedule, a budget figure, or a bookings opening date, leaving trade partners with no firm timeline beyond the prior placeholder.
How far did the launch slip?
Sefu was originally targeted to enter service ahead of summer 2027. The new spring 2028 target shifts the brand's revenue start by about a year. R Yacht first named the vessel in late 2025.
For sellers, the slip means one fewer new-build luxury small ship to merchandise during the 2027 booking cycle — a category where capacity changes move average daily rates.
What is Sefu?
The 10,000-ton ship is under construction at the West Sea shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. It will carry 120 passengers, placing it in the luxury small-ship category.
R Yacht said the vessel will offer itineraries to Japan and other Far East destinations. The company has yet to announce a full deployment.
The name "Sefu" combines two Japanese words — "Setouchi" and "wind" — and was announced in late 2025, according to Cruise Industry News.
Why Uno Port?
R Yacht said Sefu will fly the Japanese flag and be registered at the Port of Uno. The company described Uno as a "key point for maritime traffic connecting Honshu and Shikoku."
"Today it welcomes many travelers as a gateway to the Setouchi Inland Sea islands, including Naoshima," R Yacht said in the newsletter.
The homeport choice points to a Setouchi-focused product — art islands, food, culture, regional ports — rather than a standard long-haul cruise circuit. R Yacht said it aims to "transmit the charm of the Setouchi Sea, islands, food, culture and port towns to Japanese and international travelers."
"Uno Port has sent off and welcomed countless people to the Setouchi Inland Sea. From now on, its name will travel the seas together with Sefu," the company added.
A Japanese-flag registry limits the natural sales base to domestic buyers unless R Yacht opens dedicated international channels. The operator has not disclosed agent or overseas distribution plans.
What is still unknown for sellers?
Three items will determine how Sefu fits into retail portfolios:
- Itineraries and season length. R Yacht said deployment will be "announced at a later date." Without routes, agents cannot quote pricing or build packages.
- Booking window. R Yacht has not said when reservations will open.
- International sales access. Japanese-language materials and registry suggest a domestic-first push. Non-resident booking paths remain unclear.
What comes next?
R Yacht has set spring 2028 as the new target, with build progress continuing at West Sea and homeport preparations underway in Uno. The operator is expected to release deployment details and a bookings opening date in a subsequent update; until then, travel sellers should treat Sefu as a 2028 itinerary product rather than a 2027 sell.
