Holland America Bets on Pickleball to Sell Out Its Private Island
Holland America pairs with the PPA Tour and MLP for the first pro pickleball invitational on a private island, plus four themed Countdown Cruises through 2026-27.
Itinerary
- First-ever professional pickleball invitational on a private island takes place March 13, 2027, at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, during a seven-day Nieuw Statendam cruise departing March 7, 2027.
- Holland America partners with the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball; four Countdown Cruises with onboard pickleball programming run from November 20, 2026, to January 23, 2027.
- Every Holland America ship already offers at least one pickleball court with ocean views, equipment, instruction and open play.
- The event coincides with the 30th anniversary of RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay.
Holland America Line will host the first-ever professional pickleball invitational on a private island, anchoring a five-sailing Caribbean program that begins November 2026 and runs through March 2027.
The cruise line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour and Major League Pickleball (MLP) for the event. The "Private Island Invitational" takes place March 13, 2027, on RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, during the Nieuw Statendam's seven-day "Eastern Caribbean: San Juan & St. Thomas" voyage departing March 7, 2027. Professional players will compete on the island's four new pickleball courts.
The strategy is straightforward: attach a sports event to a privately controlled destination, then build a sales runway of themed departures leading up to it. Four "Countdown Cruises" with onboard pickleball programming — including opportunities for guests to meet professional players — precede the invitational:
- November 20, 2026: nine-day "Southern Caribbean" on the Nieuw Amsterdam
- December 12, 2026: seven-day "Western Caribbean: Greater Antilles and Mexico" on the Zuiderdam
- January 2, 2027: seven-day "Eastern Caribbean: Amber Cove and Bahamas" on the Eurodam
- January 23, 2027: seven-day "Eastern Caribbean: Amber Cove and Bahamas" on the Eurodam
Holland America has not yet named the professionals appearing on each sailing. Those details will be announced in the coming months, which means agents selling the early departures are pitching the format, not the talent.
Built on an existing fleetwide program
The invitational extends a pickleball program Holland America already runs across its fleet. Every ship carries at least one pickleball court with ocean views, plus equipment, beginner instruction and open play. That positions the new event as an upsell of an established onboard product rather than a from-scratch build — relevant for sellers weighing how niche sports-themed inventory performs against standard Caribbean itineraries.
The event also marks the 30th anniversary of RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, the company said in a press release.
What the operators are saying
"At Holland America Line, we believe experiences are too good to hurry through," said Kacy Cole, Holland America Line's chief marketing officer. "That's why bringing the first-ever professional pickleball invitational to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay feels like a perfect fit, combining the excitement of one of the world's fastest-growing sports with the unmatched beauty of one of the Caribbean's most extraordinary islands in a way only Holland America can."
"This exciting new offering from the PPA, MLP and Holland America Line, the Private Island Invitational competition at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, shows how pickleball is a sport that can truly be enjoyed anywhere," said Jacob Cohen, chief revenue officer for PPA & MLP.
For travel sellers, the play is a targeted one: pickleball has become a proven affinity-segment driver in resorts and land-based tourism, and Holland America is now testing whether that demand converts to cruise bookings around a fixed-date event at a private destination it controls outright. The lineup of participating professionals, expected in the coming months, will be the clearest signal of how hard the line plans to push the format.
