Holland America Bases Westerdam in Japan for Six-Ship Asia Push
Holland America's Westerdam begins a Japan fall season with a 14-night Honshu circumnavigation, part of a six-ship Asia deployment running through spring 2027.
Itinerary
- The 1,900-passenger Westerdam arrived in Tokyo on September 27, 2026, after a 13-night repositioning cruise from Vancouver via Ketchikan, Kushiro and Aomori.
- The fall season opens with a 14-night roundtrip Honshu circumnavigation from Tokyo calling at ten destinations including Busan, South Korea, before the ship shifts to Hong Kong–Singapore itineraries in November.
- The Westerdam is part of a six-ship Holland America deployment in Asia and is scheduled for refurbishment under the Evolution program, with fleet refits planned for 2027 and 2028 including new single balcony staterooms on the Oosterdam and Zuiderdam.
Holland America Line has positioned the 1,900-passenger Westerdam in Japan for a fall season that anchors a six-ship deployment across Asia, extending the Carnival Corporation brand's commitment to a market where premium capacity remains thin relative to demand.
The 2004-built ship docked in Tokyo on September 27, 2026, ending a 13-night transpacific repositioning cruise from Vancouver that called at Ketchikan, Kushiro and Aomori. The sailing followed a full summer deployment in Alaska, marking a direct capacity transfer between two of the line's core premium markets.
The Japan season opens with a 14-night circumnavigation of Honshu Island, sailing roundtrip from Tokyo to ten destinations including Toyama, Sakata, Kobe and Kochi. The itinerary also crosses into South Korea with a call at Busan — a port pairing that lets Holland America sell a two-country product from a single Tokyo turnaround, simplifying air arrangements for North American and Australian source markets.
The Japan program runs through early November, when the Westerdam pivots to Southeast Asia itineraries operating between Hong Kong and Singapore. That routing keeps the vessel in continuous revenue service across the repositioning window rather than sending it back across the Pacific, a deployment pattern that maximizes earning days in high-yield Asian port pairs.
In early 2027, the ship adds Holland America's "Coral Triangle & Great Barrier Reef" itinerary to Australia and the South Pacific, followed by additional Japan cruises in spring 2027 before a repositioning voyage back to North America. The Westerdam returns to Alaska in mid-April 2027, closing the loop on a deployment cycle the line has now repeated across multiple seasons.
For travel sellers, the schedule creates a long booking window of exotic itineraries — Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia — that typically command higher per-diem pricing and attract longer-lead bookings than Caribbean product.
The deployment runs alongside a hardware investment. The Westerdam is slated for a major refurbishment under Holland America's Evolution update program, part of a refit wave planned for 2027 and 2028. No drydock date has been announced.
The first two ships in the program, the Oosterdam and the Zuiderdam, will receive a series of new single balcony staterooms — a cabin category aimed at the solo traveler segment, which has grown into a measurable revenue driver across premium lines. The refits also bring the Grand Dutch Café, currently available only on the fleet's newest ships, to older tonnage, spreading a brand signature that Holland America uses to differentiate its product.
Upgrades will cover public areas and existing staterooms, meaning the Westerdam's Asia itineraries in 2027 could sail with partially refreshed hardware depending on drydock timing.
The combination of sustained Asia capacity and fleet-wide refurbishment spending signals that Holland America sees the region as a structural part of its deployment, not a seasonal experiment — and sellers with clients in Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia should expect inventory from this ship through at least spring 2027.
