Chinese arrivals to Thailand fell 24% week-on-week to 49,494 in the week of October 18–24, a drop Thai officials link partly to seasonality and partly to a safety advisory issued by the Chinese embassy in Bangkok on October 16.

The advisory, reported by the South China Morning Post, cited recent cases of Chinese nationals who went missing, were unlawfully detained, or were lured toward the Thailand–Myanmar border. It warned of fraudulent job offers and business and investment invitations, and urged travelers to tighten safety precautions.

The timing could hardly be worse for Thai sellers of travel. The warning landed roughly two weeks after the Golden Week holiday began, when Chinese demand was showing its clearest recovery signal since the pandemic-era collapse.

How fast did the market turn?

Thai Hotels Association president Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun told Skift daily Chinese arrivals dropped from about 15,000 during Golden Week to about 9,000 after the advisory.

The damage is concentrated in the group segment. The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) said cancellations tied to the October 16 advisory have pushed Chinese group-tour business more than 30% below last year's levels. ATTA warned the segment could halve over Lunar New Year 2027 without government action.

That matters for distribution economics. Group tours are booked through agents and wholesalers, so a 30% shortfall translates directly into lower commission volumes for Thai operators and their Chinese counterparts, not just softer overall visitor counts.

The reversal interrupts a rebuilding phase that had produced measurable gains:

  • Minor Hotels told Skift before the holiday that Chinese room nights on the books across its Thailand portfolio were 78% ahead of Golden Week last year.
  • China had retaken the top source-market spot, with about 4.2 million arrivals to Thailand through October 31.
  • Thailand had secured aviation, marketing, and entry-screening agreements aimed at rebuilding Chinese demand.

Takeaway: measured bookings momentum from a named operator and source-market data gave the rebound substance; the advisory reversed it within days.

What has Thailand done to the forecasts?

The government has already marked down its targets. Thailand cut its 2026 China target to 5.1 million arrivals and lowered its full-year visitor forecast to 33 million, down from 36.7 million.

The broader context compounds the pressure. Total foreign arrivals fell 4.1% year-on-year to 24.4 million between January 1 and October 17, meaning China was one of the few growth engines before the advisory landed.

The distinction between measurement and projection matters here. The 49,494 weekly arrivals figure and the 30% group-tour decline are measured results. The halving of Chinese group business over Lunar New Year 2027 is ATTA's projection, contingent on whether Bangkok can address the safety concerns Beijing raised.

Lunar New Year 2027 falls in early February, giving Thai operators and the government roughly three months to restore confidence before the next peak booking window for Chinese travelers reveals whether the damage is a dip or a sustained reset.
