VisitMalta has embedded an AI assistant into its travel advisor training platform, turning a routine certification program into a live sales tool for North American agents. The feature, called TA SmartAssist, sits inside the Malta Experts Sales Companion and was built with TravPRO Mobile.

The move matters because it shifts the destination's advisor strategy from education to assistance at the point of sale. Where traditional tourism board programs certify agents through webinars and quizzes, SmartAssist puts answers, itineraries and client-facing materials inside the booking conversation itself.

What does the AI actually do?

Advisors can ask questions about Malta and get answers drawn from destination-approved information rather than open internet searches — a closed-content approach (the AI answers only from VisitMalta-vetted material). They can also generate suggested itineraries, client communications, presentations and other sales collateral on demand.

The Malta Experts program already offered destination certification, multimedia training and promotional resources. SmartAssist adds an always-available layer on top, combining training with instant access to tourism information, marketing materials and itinerary-building tools.

Michelle Buttigieg, VisitMalta Representative North America, said the initiative aims to help advisors deepen their destination knowledge while showcasing Malta's luxury tourism offerings and curated travel experiences.

The platform is available through MaltaExperts.com and mobile applications.

Why is a small Mediterranean island buying AI?

The commercial logic is straightforward. In the North American outbound market, Malta competes for advisor attention against far larger European brands with bigger budgets and stronger name recognition. If an agent can query Malta as easily as they can query Spain, the playing field tilts, at least marginally.

The initiative also reflects a wider trend among destination marketing organizations, or DMOs (the national or regional bodies that promote a destination to travelers and trade), toward practical digital tools that support advisors throughout the booking process rather than one-off certification.

Is AI support the new familiarization trip?

The development raises a real question for the trade: could AI-powered advisor support become as important as familiarization trips, webinars and destination certification? By making destination information easier to reach during live conversations with prospective travelers, tourism boards may strengthen advisor relationships and lift the visibility of lesser-known experiences.

The caveats are equally real. Effectiveness will depend on the accuracy of the information, how often content gets updated, and whether AI-generated recommendations genuinely help advisors serve travelers rather than simply push a destination. An assistant that hallucinates a hotel amenity costs an agent credibility, not the tourism board.

What happens next?

VisitMalta's initiative is an early example of destination marketing evolving from information distribution toward AI-assisted travel planning and sales support. Expect other small and mid-sized DMOs to watch whether SmartAssist moves actual bookings before they budget for their own versions.
