TUI River Cruises Puts Summer 2028 on Sale With Two Newbuilds
TUI River Cruises opens its biggest season yet: 10 ships, 43 itineraries, newbuilds Zora and Velara, and a first Seine deployment from October 15, 2026.
Itinerary
- Summer 2028 program: 10 ships, 43 itineraries, 3–14 nights, on sale October 15, 2026
- Newbuilds TUI Zora (Rhine, May 7, 2028) and TUI Velara (Danube, August 14, 2028), each with 94 cabins for 188 guests
- TUI Elara moves to the Seine from March 20, 2028 with 4-, 7- and 10-night itineraries
- Both newbuilds are designed for methanol-compatible alternative fuels
- Dedicated solo sailings on TUI Maya (Danube) and TUI Skyla (Rhine)
TUI River Cruises has opened its largest-ever river program: 10 ships and 43 itineraries for summer 2028, on sale from October 15, 2026. The launch adds two purpose-built newbuilds, TUI Zora and TUI Velara, and moves the TUI Elara to the Seine — the brand's first deployment on that river.
For sellers of travel, the date that matters most is October 15, 2026, when the full March-to-October 2028 season opens for booking. Sailings run 3 to 14 nights.
What do the newbuilds bring?
Zora and Velara are the first ships designed specifically for TUI River Cruises and aimed squarely at the UK market. Each carries 188 passengers in 94 cabins — a 2:1 cabin-to-guest ratio that keeps them in the boutique band of river cruising.
Both ship names were chosen with guest input, TUI said in a press release, adding that guests "shaped" the vessels "based on what they said they wanted." Zora means "dawn" or "new beginnings"; Velara means "to shine."
Pricing structure is standard TUI River: Full Board Plus as default, with an All Inclusive upgrade — the familiar upsell lever for agents commissioning onboard spend.
TUI Zora debuts on the Rhine on May 7, 2028. TUI Velara follows on the Danube on August 14, 2028. Both hulls have foundations for alternative fuels, particularly methanol — a compliance hedge as EU emissions rules tighten on inland waterways.
Why is the Seine move significant?
The TUI Elara, joining the fleet in March 2027, shifts to the Seine from March 20, 2028. TUI called the ship "the right size" for the river — a nod to the draft and lock constraints that limit which vessels can operate there.
The adults-only ship will run four-, seven- and 10-night itineraries through northern France, sailing through Paris past the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Musée d'Orsay, plus Vernon and Rouen. Normandy's D-Day landing beaches feature as a paid "TUI River Cruise Collections" excursion — a shorex (shore excursion) revenue line attached to the Paris pull.
Onboard, Elara carries Verdastro, an à la carte main restaurant, plus The Observatory lounge-bar and a top deck with sun loungers, a putting green and space for yoga, deck games and BBQs.
How does the rest of the fleet line up?
The summer 2028 deployment reshuffles several ships across rivers:
- TUI Luzia stays on the Douro with seven-night sailings covering Porto, the Douro Valley and Peso da Régua
- TUI Maya runs dedicated solo sailings on the Danube
- TUI Skyla runs dedicated solo sailings on the Rhine
- TUI Aria moves to the Danube
The solo-deployment strategy is the notable one for trade partners: solo cruiser demand has outpaced single-supplement-heavy supply, and dedicated sailings convert that demand directly.
The scale is the story. Ten ships on one program is a statement of intent from a river brand still young relative to Viking and AmaWaterways, and two methanol-ready newbuilds signal capital committed beyond a single cycle. Whether guests buy in those numbers, we learn from October 2026 onward.
