Royal Caribbean Locks SpongeBob Musical Onto Fourth Icon-Class Ship
Royal Caribbean will stage the first at-sea production of The SpongeBob Musical on Hero of the Seas, its fourth Icon-class ship sailing from Miami in August 2027. Every sailing calls at CocoCay.

Itinerary
- Hero of the Seas will debut the first at-sea production of The SpongeBob Musical when it begins sailing from Miami in August 2027.
- The 250,800-ton Icon-class ship was floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and carries eight neighborhoods, Category 6 water park and nine pools.
- Every Hero sailing will visit Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas on seven-night Eastern or Western Caribbean rotations.
- Western rotations call at Cozumel, Mexico and Roatan, Honduras; Eastern rotations call at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
- Royal Caribbean framed the production as 'the first-ever at-sea production of the musical,' citing the 12-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway title.
Royal Caribbean will stage the first at-sea production of "The SpongeBob Musical" on Hero of the Seas, its fourth Icon-class ship scheduled to begin seven-night Caribbean sailings from Miami in August 2027.
The musical — an adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series and a 12-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway show — will run in the ship's Royal Theater, the company said. Royal Caribbean called it "the first-ever at-sea production of the musical" in a statement, a designation tied to the Broadway-licensed title.

Why does the SpongeBob booking matter for sellers?
For agents selling family cruises, the licensing delivers a recognizable IP to anchor pitches. SpongeBob operates as a cross-generational property — adults who watched the animated series can sell the same brand to their children — giving travel sellers a familiar hook in family consultations.
"At Royal Caribbean, we're focused on creating incredible experiences that bring families of all ages together in meaningful, memorable ways," said Christi Coachman, vice president, entertainment, Royal Caribbean.
"Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with something for everyone. 'The SpongeBob Musical' delivers on that by bringing generations together through a story families know and love, while showcasing the creativity, cutting-edge technology and world-class production that can only be experienced on a Royal Caribbean vacation."
The company did not disclose theatre capacity, ticket pricing or whether seating will carry an upcharge. Travel sellers should note that entertainment headliners on Icon-class ships have historically anchored the pitch around onboard value rather than ticket revenue.
What does the itinerary look like?
Every Hero of the Seas sailing will call at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. Western Caribbean rotations add Cozumel, Mexico and Roatan, Honduras. Eastern Caribbean sailings include Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas and Philipsburg in St. Maarten.
The CocoCay-every-sailing model carries clear distribution implications. Agents selling Icon-class deployments can position the private destination as a guaranteed call, eliminating the itinerary variability that complicates family booking decisions on older Royal Caribbean ships. Western and Eastern rotations also give sellers a rotation-pair to pitch based on repeat-port preferences.
What should agents track?
The August 2027 launch sits roughly 21 months out. Trade indicators worth monitoring between now and then include:
- Whether Royal Caribbean announces reserved or premium seating tiers for the production
- How inaugural-season pricing compares against the first three Icon-class ships from the same Miami base
- Group booking patterns for multigenerational family accounts once reservations open broadly
- Whether the licensed-Broadway approach extends to other vessels in the class
How does this fit Royal Caribbean's content strategy?
The SpongeBob deal extends a strategy of bringing named theatrical titles to the fleet, layering entertainment into the value proposition travel sellers pitch on Icon-class sailings. Hero of the Seas is the fourth Icon-class hull and continues a capacity-expansion push within the family cruise segment.
Whether a 12-time Tony-nominated show materially lifts advance bookings, or simply defends the Icon-class fare structure already in market, will not become measurable until post-launch revenue figures surface.
Bookings for the August 2027 inaugural and beyond are available through royalcaribbean.com and travel agent partners.
