MSC Breaks Ground on Sandy Cay, Second Private Bahamas Island
MSC has broken ground on Sandy Cay, a second private Bahamas island for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests, targeting a 2028 opening alongside upgrades to Ocean Cay.

Itinerary
- MSC broke ground on Sandy Cay on September 28, with opening scheduled for 2028.
- Sandy Cay will serve guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys exclusively, positioned as an intimate, wellness-focused upscale complement to Ocean Cay.
- Ocean Cay will receive new dining venues, family and adults-only beach concepts, expanded relaxation areas and marine conservation experiences.
MSC Cruises has broken ground on Sandy Cay, a second private island destination in The Bahamas, with construction already well underway ahead of a scheduled 2028 opening. The ceremony on September 28 puts a firm date on a project the company first announced in April 2026.
Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Group's Cruise Division, attended alongside Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas, together with government officials and project stakeholders. The Bahamian government's presence signals the project's weight for a national economy where cruise-driven visitation is a core revenue line.
Sandy Cay sits adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the private island that has anchored MSC's Caribbean itineraries since it opened. The new island will be developed exclusively for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, the group's luxury brand — a structure that keeps the capacity in-house rather than opening it to third-party operators.
MSC is positioning the two islands as distinct products rather than duplicate assets. According to the company, Sandy Cay is designed to complement Ocean Cay with a more intimate, upscale experience centered on wellness and relaxation, with beaches, dining venues, relaxation spaces, private retreats and curated experiences. That positioning gives Explora Journeys, which competes in the luxury segment where private-island access is a differentiator against the likes of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day model, a dedicated premium shoreside product.
Ocean Cay is getting its own round of upgrades. New additions will include more dining venues, new beach concepts split between families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and new experiences tied to the island's marine conservation work. The investment extends the useful life and per-guest spend potential of an asset already fixed on the brand's Caribbean routings.
For travel sellers, the two-island setup changes what MSC can package in the Caribbean. The company said the islands will operate as distinct destinations with their own character, giving MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests two private island options in The Bahamas. That effectively doubles the private-destination inventory MSC controls in the region, strengthening its hand in a Caribbean market where private islands increasingly drive itinerary choice and brand switching.
The financial terms of the development, including total investment and projected capacity, were not disclosed. The 2028 opening date is a company schedule, not a delivered result, and Caribbean construction timelines have historically slipped — sellers building 2028 and beyond Caribbean programs should treat the date as provisional until MSC confirms first callings.
Construction and site work at Sandy Cay are already well underway, and MSC's pattern at Ocean Cay — where the company converted a former industrial sand extraction site into a marine reserve-branded destination — suggests the group will continue to market the environmental angle as part of the guest proposition.
With Sandy Cay and the Ocean Cay upgrades running in parallel, MSC is consolidating its Caribbean position across both its contemporary and luxury brands at once.
