ITM and BCD Travel Draft Joint AI 'Blueprint' for Corporate Buyers
ITM and BCD Travel have partnered to co-author an AI adoption 'blueprint' for corporate travel programs, pairing the UK buyer association with one of the world's largest TMCs as AI pitches multiply.
Itinerary
- ITM and BCD Travel are co-authoring an AI adoption 'blueprint' for corporate travel programs
- The collaboration pairs a UK and Ireland buyer association with one of the world's five largest TMCs
- The blueprint will map AI use cases across booking, policy, expense and reporting workflows
- No delivery date, working group chair or funding model has been disclosed in the announcement
- Competing TMCs including Amex GBT, CWT and FCM are also pitching AI tools to the same corporate buyers
ITM, the UK and Ireland's largest membership body for corporate travel buyers, has partnered with global TMC BCD Travel to co-author an AI adoption "blueprint" for managed travel programs, according to Business Travel News Europe.
The collaboration is unusual on its face. ITM represents the buy side — procurement and travel managers running corporate programs — while BCD sits on the supply side as one of the world's five largest TMCs, handling booking, servicing and reporting for clients. A joint framework document puts those two constituencies on the same drafting page and signals where the corporate market believes the next operational wave is headed.
What the partnership covers
The blueprint will map AI use cases across the corporate travel workflow — from traveller policy enforcement and booking flow to expense reconciliation and supplier reporting — and offer buyers a structured method for evaluating tools. The output is positioned as a reference, not a product: BCD does not gain privileged access to ITM member data, and ITM members do not commit to a BCD technology stack.
Why this matters for sellers of travel
For BCD, the move is a defensive play as much as an offensive one. Corporate buyers have spent the past 18 months fielding overlapping AI pitches from TMCs, online booking tools, expense platforms and a long tail of startups. Most procurement teams lack the technical depth to score those claims on their merits. A buyer-end framework endorsed by ITM gives BCD a seat at the table for setting the evaluation criteria itself, ahead of competitors Amex GBT, CWT and FCM Travel.
For the wider distribution stack, the blueprint could tighten the criteria by which every TMC's AI offering is judged. If ITM members adopt the framework as a procurement checklist, vendors that fail its scoring risk being filtered out of RFPs early in the cycle — a meaningful shift in a UK corporate travel market that runs into single-digit billions of pounds annually.
Limits of the agreement
The announcement does not specify a delivery date, a working group chair, or a funding model. ITM's recent strategy has emphasised member value and policy advocacy rather than product launches. BCD's public AI roadmap to date has focused on internal agent productivity tools and enhancements to its TripSource traveller app. Whether the blueprint lands as a co-branded white paper, a workshop series, or a formal procurement standard remains undecided.
What to watch
The test will be whether the document travels beyond ITM's UK and Ireland footprint. ACTE, GBTA and other buyer associations have signalled interest in similar guidance. If ITM and BCD produce a framework other associations adopt or reference, they will have set the de facto benchmark for AI procurement in managed corporate travel — a position no vendor or buyer body has held to date.
