Hapag-Lloyd Sends Europa and Europa 2 to Drydock in 2027
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises drydocks both flagship ships in 2027: Europa 2 in Singapore in January with some 250 suites refreshed, then Europa in Bremerhaven in the fall.

Itinerary
- Europa 2 (500 guests) enters drydock in Singapore in January 2027; Europa (400 guests) follows in Bremerhaven in fall 2027.
- Approximately 250 suites on Europa 2 will receive new color schemes.
- Spring 2027 itineraries include Europa 2 maiden visits to Western Australia, Papua New Guinea and Palau.
- Managing Director Isolde Susset, who retires at the end of this year, announced the refit program.
- Plans for the Europa are still being finalized, with updates expected in the coming months.
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will pull both of its top-tier ships from service in 2027, starting with the 500-guest Europa 2 entering drydock in Singapore in January, followed by the 400-guest Europa in Bremerhaven in the fall.
The German luxury operator outlined a refit program that ranges from design changes, technical upgrades and maintenance to conceptual developments — code for rethinking revenue-generating venues, not just repainting corridors.
What changes on Europa 2?
The Singapore yard period targets the ship's core premium product. Plans include:
- New color schemes for approximately 250 suites
- Modernization of the atrium and its piano bar
- Visual upgrades to specialty restaurants Sakura and Elements
- Conceptual expansion of Elements
The scale matters for sellers of high-end cruising. With roughly 250 suites refreshed, the line is effectively resetting the visual baseline of its entire accommodations inventory on a vessel that competes at the top of the German-speaking luxury market. Agents positioning Europa 2 against Seabourn, Silversea or Regent can expect a materially updated product to sell from spring 2027.
The refit also aligns with itinerary ambitions Hapag-Lloyd has already announced: the spring 2027 season brings maiden visits for Europa 2 to destinations in Western Australia, Papua New Guinea and Palau. A refreshed ship paired with first-time calls gives sales teams a fresh angle on a vessel well into its service life.
What about the Europa?
Plans for the 400-guest Europa remain under negotiation. Hapag-Lloyd said details are still being finalized, with further updates promised in the coming months. The Bremerhaven timing — fall 2027 — positions the work after the peak European summer season, minimizing displaced inventory during the line's strongest selling window.
Who is driving the program?
Managing Director Isolde Susset, who retires at the end of this year, framed the investment in the line's announcement.
"For us, progress means knowing from experience what makes our ships distinctive, while simultaneously having the courage to change what's right," Susset said. "We change what can be improved. We invest in what creates new opportunities. And we preserve what makes our ships unique."
The statement reads as a legacy marker for a departing executive, but the capital commitment behind it is concrete: two full drydock periods within a single calendar year for a fleet that trades on hardware freshness as much as service ratios.
Why should the trade care?
For travel sellers, the 2027 refits create both opportunity and friction. Opportunity: refreshed suites, reworked restaurants and maiden calls in Australia and the Pacific give agents new talking points at price points where repeat guests scrutinize detail. Friction: both ships go dark during their respective yard periods, tightening availability in a small fleet where the Europa pair carries outsized weight in the luxury segment.
Hapag-Lloyd has not disclosed the cost of the works or the exact duration of either drydock — details the trade will need before committing 2027 bookings around the out-of-service windows. The line says further updates, particularly on the Europa's scope, will follow in the coming months.
