Funktion Leisure buys Groupia's StagWeb and GoHen out of administration

Funktion Leisure has bought Groupia out of administration and reopened bookings at StagWeb and GoHen, two UK stag and hen brands claiming 750,000 customers since 2002, ending a three-month shutdown.

Itinerary

  1. Funktion Leisure acquired Groupia, parent of StagWeb and GoHen, out of administration in September 2026 for an undisclosed sum.
  2. Groupia had traded for 24 years before entering administration in June 2026.
  3. StagWeb and GoHen claim more than 750,000 combined customers since 2002.
  4. Funktion Events has arranged more than 55,000 hen parties and 12,000 stag weekends since 2007 and is ABTA-bonded.
  5. Funktion said it will publish integration and investment plans over the coming months.

Funktion Leisure has rescued StagWeb and GoHen, the two flagship stag and hen brands of collapsed Bath-based parent Groupia, in a deal that puts the businesses back online after a three-month shutdown.

The Cheshire-based events company, trading as Funktion Events and ABTA-bonded since 2007, acquired Groupia out of administration for an undisclosed sum. Several former Groupia staff have been retained. Groupia had traded for 24 years before entering administration in June.

Combined, StagWeb and GoHen claim more than 750,000 customers since 2002, according to figures cited by Funktion Events managing director Jay Broughton. Funktion Events itself has arranged more than 55,000 hen parties and 12,000 stag weekends over the same period.

The acquisition folds two of the UK's most recognised stag and hen travel brands under a single ABTA-protected operator, ending months of uncertainty for the destination suppliers and travel intermediaries that service their packages. ABTA bonding is the principal consumer protection mechanism for UK package travel and a condition most European hotels and DMCs require from the operators that drive their group business.

What changes for sellers of travel?

Groupia collapsed in June 2026, freezing an order book that included partially paid consumer bookings. The administration process paused new trading and ring-fenced existing liabilities. Funktion's relaunch reopens the revenue tap for the European DMCs, hotel groups, transfer operators and restaurant chains that depend on the brands' volume.

For hotel and DMC partners, the immediate question is contract continuity. Funktion said every brand is "live and taking bookings," suggesting existing supplier agreements are being honoured, though the company has not confirmed whether commission structures will change.

The relaunch also closes a short-term competitive gap. From June, smaller UK stag and hen operators and European DMCs running their own group business picked up share. Funktion's re-entry will likely force those players back into a price and marketing contest over the autumn 2026 and spring 2027 booking windows.

What claims is the new operator making?

Broughton framed the acquisition as a defensive move to capture demand he says never went away.

"We acquired GoHen and StagWeb out of administration because they're two of the strongest names in UK hen and stag travel, with more than 750,000 customers between them since 2002," Broughton said.

"Both are back open and taking bookings, and early demand since the relaunch has been really encouraging, which tells us the appetite for these brands never went away."

The 750,000-customer figure is a cumulative count since 2002, not a forward bookings or revenue projection. Funktion has not disclosed transaction volumes, average order value, or pre-administration losses. The "early demand" claim is unverified, and administration-era customer refunds and disputed bookings could still weigh on margins.

What does the deal mean for the wider UK group travel sector?

UK stag and hen travel is a high-volume, low-margin segment dominated by a handful of specialist operators. The sector is heavily exposed to consumer discretionary spend, FX moves against the euro and zloty, and the operating costs of the southern European and central European destinations that anchor most packages. ABTA bonding adds a cost line smaller competitors often struggle to absorb.

The Groupia collapse is the first major UK specialist failure in this segment in several years. Funktion's bolt-on rescue of two consumer-facing brands with a combined 24-year pedigree is a defensible move for a privately held events group with ABTA infrastructure already in place.

Whether the deal generates an acceptable return will depend on the integration plan Funktion has not yet shared. The company said it will publish details of its investment "over the coming months." Until then, the trade has Broughton's word on stability and a relaunched booking engine as the only forward indicators.
