- AKTG acquired the Cox & Kings brand in 2019 after the company suspended operations
- The operator was founded in London in 1758
- Cox & Kings just expanded from the U.K. into Australia
- U.S. product will focus on small-group journeys and private tailormade tours
Cox & Kings will begin U.S. operations in September, marking the tour operator's reentry into the American market seven years after its previous operation there collapsed.
The company, which bills itself as the world's oldest travel company, unveiled a brand refresh on Friday. Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group (AKTG) bought the Cox & Kings brand in 2019, after the original company suspended operations. The relaunch is now moving beyond the U.K.: the operator has just expanded into Australia, and the U.S. launch is next.
For travel sellers, the September debut adds a new heritage-brand supplier of small-group journeys and private tailormade tours — two of the higher-margin categories in escorted travel — to the North American distribution mix.
What does the refresh include?
Founded in London in 1758, Cox & Kings returns with a repositioned identity built around curiosity and cultural exploration. The updated logo pairs a contemporary design with a horse emblem drawn from the company's 18th-century roots.
AKTG chief brand officer Peter Chipchase led the campaign. Its components:
- A redesigned website
- An updated social media strategy
- Trade and consumer marketing
"Reawakening a brand as storied as Cox & Kings is both a privilege and a responsibility," Chipchase said. "Pioneering culturally adventurous travel, Cox & Kings has always been driven by a spirit of exploration and discovery."
Why it matters for the U.S. trade
The September launch gives U.S. advisors and tour operators a familiar name with rebuilt infrastructure behind it, backed by AKTG's portfolio. Chipchase's reference to a "responsibility" signals the group's awareness that the brand's 2019 operational suspension still shapes trade perception.
No commission structure, itinerary details or U.S. staffing numbers accompanied Friday's announcement — sellers of travel will need those specifics before the September start to judge how Cox & Kings competes against entrenched small-group players.
The U.S. launch in September will test whether a 268-year-old brand, retooled under AKTG ownership, can reclaim distribution share in the world's largest source market for escorted cultural travel.
