Costa Serena's First Yokohama Call Kicks Off Farewell Asia Season
Costa Serena made its maiden Yokohama call on October 7, 2026, during its farewell Asia season, before repositioning October 18 on a 65-night cruise to Buenos Aires.
Itinerary
- Costa Serena made its maiden call at the Port of Yokohama on October 7, 2026.
- The ship departs Tokyo on October 18, 2026 on a 65-night world cruise to Buenos Aires.
- It sails a South America season from November 2026 to April 2027, then repositions to Europe in late April 2027.
- A 15-member team from Yokohama's Port and Harbor Bureau welcomed Captain Orazio D'Aita and crew.
- The 2007-built ship ends more than a decade of sailing in Asia with this farewell season.
Costa Serena made its first-ever call at the Port of Yokohama on October 7, 2026 — a port debut that doubles as a farewell, since the ship leaves Asia for good eleven days later.
The visit is part of the vessel's final season in a region where it has sailed for more than a decade. For Carnival Corporation's Costa Cruises, the call is a distribution event as much as a ceremonial one: Yokohama sits on an itinerary that Costa has already sold through Japan and Korea, calling at Kobe, Nagasaki, Busan and Kanazawa before ending in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
How Yokohama handled the maiden call
The port rolled out a formal welcome. A 15-member team from Yokohama's Port and Harbor Bureau — drawn from its Cruise Promotion and Technical units — greeted Captain Orazio D'Aita and his crew. The two sides exchanged a commemorative plaque onboard, and the port team then toured the ship.
The port said the tour gave it a chance to strengthen its relationship with Costa Cruises. That framing matters for sellers of travel: berth relationships and port-side promotion teams are the infrastructure behind future deployments, and a plaque exchange is how ports bank goodwill for ships that haven't been announced yet.
In plain terms: Yokohama treated a departing ship as a down payment on future Costa business.
What happens to the ship next?
The repositioning is unusually long. Costa Serena departs Tokyo on October 18 on a 65-night world cruise to Buenos Aires, calling in Australia, the South Pacific and South America along the way.
From there the deployment splits into two seasons:
- Winter 2026–27: a South America season running November 2026 through April 2027.
- Late April 2027: repositioning to Europe for Mediterranean itineraries.
For the 2007-built ship, the move marks a full shift of revenue base — from Asia-Pacific sourcing to Southern Hemisphere and then European sourcing, with a world cruise segment that typically commands the highest per-diems (daily rates) in the business as a bridge between them.
Why the withdrawal from Asia matters for sellers
A ship that has sailed in Asia for over a decade represents established inventory for agencies selling to Japanese, Korean and Chinese source markets. Its exit tightens big-ship supply in the region and shifts those bookings toward whichever operators keep tonnage there.
The counterweight sits in the deployment math: Costa is trading a mature Asia season for a South American winter and a Mediterranean summer, markets where its brand recognition and distribution channels are stronger. The itinerary itself — Kobe, Nagasaki, Busan, Kanazawa, Hakodate — reads as a high-value Japan-Korea loop, the kind of product that tends to sell at premium fares during peak autumn demand.
Whether Yokohama's investment in the relationship pays off depends on what Costa sends east next; nothing in the farewell season rules out a successor ship. For now, the port's Cruise Promotion team has a plaque, a relationship, and an open berth.
