Corazul Bets on Portuguese-First Cruising for Brazil Launch
Corazul Cruceros will sail the 1,806-guest Buenavista from Santos and Rio in late October 2026, with Portuguese as the mandatory primary language onboard.

Itinerary
- Corazul Cruceros launches Brazil service in the 2026-27 season, starting late October from Santos and Rio de Janeiro.
- The 1,806-passenger Buenavista is a 1995-built ship handed over in late September; Astro Ocean Cruises last operated it as the Piano Land.
- Portuguese will be the primary language onboard, with most guest-facing crew speaking it.
- Brazilian rules require at least 25 percent local crew, which Corazul says it supports.
- Onboard venues include a theater, secondary lounge, disco, sports bar, two shops, casino and cinema.
Corazul Cruceros will launch cruises from Santos and Rio de Janeiro in late October 2026, and it is staking its Brazilian debut on a single operational decision: Portuguese as the primary language onboard.
COO Camille Appeldoorn laid out the positioning in an interview with Cruise Industry News this month. The company will operate the 1,806-passenger Buenavista, a 1995-built vessel handed over to Corazul in late September and last operated by Astro Ocean Cruises as the Piano Land.
"I only need two words to explain what you can expect onboard: come home," Appeldoorn said.
He expanded: "I want you to come onboard and feel like you're at home. You drop your luggage, take your shoes off, put your flip-flops on and enjoy yourself. You don't have to do anything; you can do whatever you want."
What does the product look like?
The onboard concept centers on a relaxed, informal atmosphere aimed squarely at the South American passenger rather than an international default. Appeldoorn framed the choice as deliberate across every touchpoint, from dining to entertainment to shore excursions.
"If you want to go off the ship and do a shore excursion, by all means. If you want to stay onboard, sit by the pool and have a caipirinha, please do so," he said.
The ship's layout supports that strategy. Public spaces include:
- A main theater and a secondary lounge
- A disco and a sports bar
- Two shopping areas and a casino
- Upgraded youth facilities
Appeldoorn said the design keeps passenger flow active through the evening rather than funnelling everyone into a single show slot.
"It will not be only one show in the evening and that's it. After the show, we will bring guests to the next venue. There's a cinema onboard as well," he noted.
The takeaway: Corazul is engineering the evening around multi-venue spend and dwell time, not one headline performance.
How will the crew be staffed?
Language drives hiring. Appeldoorn said most guest-facing positions will be filled by Portuguese speakers, and the company will comply with a Brazilian rule requiring cruise lines to hire at least 25 percent of their crews locally.
"We also want to because we want to deliver a product that is very much catered to the market. So yes, Portuguese is a given and a mandatory language," he said.
Behind the scenes, the crew remains international.
"You will see Filipinos, you will see Indonesians, more behind the scenes. There will be a good mixture," Appeldoorn said.
The takeaway: local-content rules become a product feature here, not a compliance cost.
What happens before the first sailing?
The Buenavista is being prepared for its maiden season as it repositions from China to South America. The vessel served the Chinese market under its previous operator, making the switch to Brazil a full market pivot: new homeports, new language, new crew mix.
The 2026-27 season from Santos and Rio de Janeiro marks Corazul's first deployment in Brazil.
For sellers of travel, the launch adds a Portuguese-first, locally staffed product to a market where that combination is rare, with bookings opening ahead of a late-October 2026 start.
