Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has opened a Cruise Center of Excellence in Miami, a dedicated cruise hub announced during this week's Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Cruise Forward Summit 2026. The move consolidates the classification society's cruise advisory business in the city that anchors the industry's largest source market.
The center puts cruise clients in direct proximity to a global network of BV experts at a moment when operators face tightening environmental rules and rising technical complexity. The cruise hub joins BV's existing Centers of Excellence in Gas (Doha) and Offshore (Singapore, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur), extending a sector-dedicated model the group has already tested elsewhere.
What does the Miami center actually offer?
BV positions the facility as a one-stop technical and advisory resource across the asset lifecycle. Its stated scope runs from turning early-stage concepts into viable designs through improving performance over a ship's operating life.
The service portfolio spans:
- decarbonization strategies, from wind propulsion to bio-LNG capability for large cruise ships;
- fire safety advisory, including lifeboat arrangements, evacuation analysis and smoke and fire propagation simulations;
- emerging technologies, digitalization and cybersecurity for future-ready operations.
The center also pulls in expertise from across the wider Bureau Veritas Group, covering ships, ports, terminals and infrastructure — an integrated approach BV says supports clients from concept development and design through operations to the guest experience.
Who is using these services already?
The launch rests on a track record with some of the industry's largest operators. BV provided dedicated monitoring and validation support to MSC Cruises, securing independent verification and Flag State recognition of actual methane emissions from two vessels, MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia, in support of FuelEU Maritime compliance — the European Union regulation that penalizes greenhouse gas intensity of shipping fuels.
BV also partnered with Brittany Ferries and the French firm Adrena to demonstrate fuel savings of up to 6% through an advanced digital twin-enabled routing solution, a result with direct cost implications for operators facing fuel levies.
On the newbuild side, BV provided classification services for the delivery of the 220-metre Orient Express Corinthian, the world's largest sailing cruise ship. The vessel carries three rigid sails with a total sail area of approximately 4,500 square metres; BV handled design review, construction surveying, and noise and vibration measurements through its advisory arm.
What did BV leadership say?
Alex Gregg-Smith, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, said: "Cruise companies operate some of the most sophisticated businesses in the world. As the industry evolves, the launch of BV's Cruise Center of Excellence helps stakeholders navigate today's challenges and shape tomorrow's opportunities."
He added: "By connecting people, knowledge and capabilities from across our organisation, we are helping build safer, more sustainable, and more efficient cruise operations, enabling operators to focus on what matters most: delivering exceptional experiences and creating lasting memories for their guests."
The framing reflects a commercial calculation: as compliance costs under FuelEU Maritime and decarbonization pressure mount, operators need verification, simulation and alternative-propulsion expertise that classification societies can monetize beyond statutory survey work.
What comes next?
BV says the Miami center reflects long-term investment in the cruise sector, and the company will work with operators, designers, shipyards and industry stakeholders to convert technical challenges — emissions verification, wind propulsion, digital routing — into classifiable, financeable projects across the cruise value chain.
