Booking Holdings has earmarked $100 million for Vayo, a travel assistant that entered private beta on October 14. The planned investment is the second consumer-facing AI product the group has rolled out in three weeks.
Lola launched in late September. Vayo followed on October 14. Separate AI work continues inside Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda and Kayak, lifting the group's count of AI-driven travel products into the high single digits.
How many travel agents does one industry need?
Sonder co-founder Francis Davidson introduced Odessia in June and relaunched it this week as an always-on concierge users text. General-purpose assistants from Muse and Instinct have added travel as a use case. On the supplier side, Accor, Hyatt, Hilton, Booking.com and Expedia have each shipped apps inside ChatGPT, and Google's AI Mode in Search now lets U.S. travelers find and book hotels inside the conversation.
The release cadence has reached a point where even reporters covering the beat lose track of which product does what. For travelers the arithmetic is more practical: each new assistant asks for an introduction, a waitlist sign-up and a fresh conversation. The convenience pitch inverts into more work.
Can chat carry a hotel sale?
The column's argument lands hardest on accommodation. Chat windows handle narrow jobs — finding a later flight, checking a visa rule — but choosing a hotel still benefits from a map, photos and side-by-side prices. Brian Chesky told the Skift Global Forum that Airbnb's forthcoming agent would be "much richer than a chatbot," a hint that the industry is already conceding text alone does not carry the transaction.
For sellers of travel, that distinction matters. Distribution partnerships, commission structures and merchandising formats built around visual comparison will not disappear because a chat box appears in front of them. They will sit behind it, raising questions about who controls the upsell and who captures the booking data when an agent sits between supplier and shopper.
Who pays the onboarding bill?
Travel suppliers have spent two decades teaching travelers to search, filter and book on branded sites. Every new external assistant repeats that education cost and adds a waitlist tax on top. Supplier apps that open inside ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode give chains a way to keep their booking funnel intact while still showing up in the new surfaces, but the conversion math remains unproven.
The columnist closes on an unfashionable suggestion: improve the existing product quietly and launch nothing.
Travel Trade Desk takeaway: more agents in more places does not translate into more bookings; the suppliers that come out ahead will be the ones whose inventory renders correctly inside whichever assistant the traveler happens to be using on a given day.
