Barcelona Approves €50 Million Terminal C, Extends Cruise Concession to 2050
Port of Barcelona approves a €50 million Terminal C with shore power and extends Creuers' cruise concession to 2050, within a €104.5 million wharf project.

Itinerary
- Port of Barcelona approved over €50 million for a new 11,253 sqm cruise terminal at Adossat Wharf
- The terminal forms part of a wider €104.5 million cruise infrastructure project
- Creuers del Port de Barcelona's concession now runs to 2050, extendable to 2053
- Terminal C will feature solar power and onshore power supply for ships at berth
- GPH regional director Francesc Grau called the approval a significant milestone
Barcelona's port authority has approved more than €50 million in investment for a new cruise terminal and extended operator Creuers del Port de Barcelona's concession to 2050, with an option to run to 2053.
The Port of Barcelona's Board of Directors signed off on the development of Terminal C at Adossat Wharf, part of a wider €104.5 million project to rebuild the port's cruise infrastructure. Global Ports Holding (GPH), which controls the Creuers concession, announced the decision in a press release.
What will the new terminal include?
The facility will cover 11,253 square meters at Adossat Wharf. Two infrastructure choices matter most for the port's operating economics and regulatory standing:
- Solar power generation on site
- Onshore power supply (OPS), letting cruise ships plug into the electricity grid at berth instead of running engines
OPS is becoming a compliance requirement rather than a selling point. European ports face tightening emissions rules for ships at berth, and terminals without grid connections risk losing calls from lines under pressure to cut fleet emissions.
What does the concession extension change?
The revised agreement secures Creuers' position in Barcelona for another quarter century. The concession now runs until 2050, with an option to extend until 2053 — a horizon long enough to justify capital-intensive upgrades such as shore power and terminal reconstruction.
For GPH, the world's largest cruise port operator, Barcelona is a core Mediterranean asset. Locking in the terminal until mid-century gives the company a stable revenue base in one of Europe's busiest cruise markets.
"This approval represents a significant milestone for Barcelona Cruise Port and reflects the strong partnership and mutual trust we have built with the Port of Barcelona," said Francesc Grau, GPH regional director West Med and general manager of Barcelona Cruise Port.
"The new Terminal C will allow us to deliver a modern, efficient and sustainable facility that enhances the cruise experience while supporting Barcelona's long-term development as a leading cruise destination," Grau said.
Why does Adossat Wharf matter?
The new terminal forms part of a broader transformation of cruise infrastructure at the wharf, which the port frames as a long-term push for more modern, efficient and sustainable facilities.
The investment arrives as Barcelona balances cruise growth against local pressure over overtourism. Shore power and on-site solar give the port and its operator an answer to emissions complaints while preserving berth capacity for the lines that anchor the business.
The takeaway: the deal pairs a nine-figure infrastructure commitment with a concession running to mid-century, giving both the port and GPH certainty on Barcelona's cruise capacity through 2050.
Construction details and timelines beyond the approval itself were not disclosed; the next signal for sellers of cruise capacity in Barcelona will be the terminal's opening date and its impact on turnaround capacity at Adossat Wharf.
