Anbessa Travel has been named Ethiopia's Leading Destination Management Company for 2026, a title announced at the 33rd World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony on August 28 at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar, Tanzania. For a company whose core business is servicing international tour operators, travel agencies, corporate clients, NGOs and event organizers, the award functions as a marketing asset in a market where Ethiopia competes with better-resourced East African rivals for operator contracts.
The Addis Ababa-based company was founded in 2012 under its former name, FKLM Ethiopia Tours. Over 14 years it has built a service portfolio that spans tailor-made cultural itineraries, wildlife and birdwatching expeditions, MICE logistics, executive chauffeur services and corporate ground transportation. That breadth matters for sellers of travel: a single contracted DMC covering both leisure product and conference logistics simplifies supplier management across complex, multi-country Horn of Africa programs.
Anbessa's operational footprint covers the destinations that anchor Ethiopia's international appeal — the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the castles of Gondar, the Simien and Bale mountains, the Omo Valley, Harar and the Danakil Depression. The company sustains this coverage through direct partnerships with hotels, conference venues, charter flight operators, transport providers and local communities, which it credits for its record of operational reliability across itineraries that frequently cross borders.
The sustainability credentials are concrete and, unusually for the region, verifiable through third-party certification. In 2016 Anbessa became the first Travelife-certified company in Ethiopia, committing to internationally recognized standards on environmental performance, labor conditions and community engagement. Travelife certification has become a de facto procurement filter for European tour operators under CSR mandates, and holding it gives Anbessa access to a distribution channel that uncertified Ethiopian competitors cannot reach.
The company's corporate responsibility program adds quantifiable detail. Electric vehicles currently account for 40 percent of its fleet, a figure aligned with Ethiopia's clean mobility push. It funds 15 student scholarships annually and runs indigenous tree planting each year at a dedicated site in Entoto Park. Over the past eight years, Anbessa has distributed 1,200 improved cookstoves to local households, reducing firewood consumption and indoor air pollution while protecting forest resources near its operating areas. Its community-based tours channel economic benefits directly to local hosts rather than through intermediaries.
Founder and General Manager Molla Miheretu framed the award as validation of the company's positioning. "This recognition is a great honour and an important source of encouragement for our team," Miheretu said. "It confirms that our commitment to quality, responsibility and authentic travel experiences is being recognized. It motivates us to continue sharing the true story of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa with travellers and partners around the world." He credited the achievement collectively to employees, clients, partners, suppliers and local community members.
The 2026 title is not the company's first external endorsement. MEA Markets named Anbessa the Best Destination Management Company in Ethiopia in 2023, giving it a three-year run of third-party recognition that trade buyers can weigh alongside certifications. The World Travel Awards, decided by industry and consumer voting rather than audited performance metrics, carry marketing weight but should be read as a reputational signal rather than a measured financial result — the company disclosed no revenue, booking volume or client-count data alongside the announcement.
For the wider market, the award directs attention to Ethiopia's destination profile at a moment when East African tourism competition is intensifying. Industry observers note that accolades of this kind help elevate a nation's standing with international buyers, and that professional, standards-driven local operators play an outsized role in converting that attention into contracted business. Anbessa's model — certification, fleet electrification, community revenue-sharing — offers a template for how mid-sized DMCs in emerging destinations can differentiate on compliance and sustainability rather than price alone.
As regional tourism continues to evolve, Anbessa says it will use the recognition to expand its partnerships and continue marketing Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa to international operators and travelers.
